Why estimate income tax before you file
If you are self-employed or run a small business, no employer is withholding tax for you. An estimate during the year tells you how much to set aside, helps you plan quarterly estimated payments and removes the shock of a large bill in April.
The IRS explains who needs to pay during the year in its guide to estimated taxes.
How this calculator works
Upload a bank statement in Excel, CSV or PDF format (up to 10MB), or paste your transactions as text. Add your email, business name and industry, then submit.
AI groups your transactions into income and expense categories that follow Schedule C, works out your net profit and estimates federal income tax and self-employment tax. We email you the categorized transactions, the income statement and the tax calculation.
What the estimate does not include
The calculation covers federal tax only. It does not include state or local income tax, credits that depend on your household, or income from outside the bank statement you upload. Personal deductions and filing status can also change the final figure.
Outside the US, or if you would rather type in your own numbers, use one of our country calculators: United States, United Kingdom, Nigeria, Germany and France.
